“Austria’s integration ministry offers, quite successfully, free courses for grown-ups”. Sorry to pile on with more negativity, but is that really the case? I know a German woman who signed up to train as a German as a Second Language teacher for refugees and she was horrified by the backwards pedagogical approaches being used for adults. She’s convinced Austrian bureaucrats don’t really want any foreigners to learn German.

Well, what i heard is that the quality of the courses are very dependent from the enthousiasm and quality of the teaching person, like in many other areas.

I would agree with Erika -- of course the quality of instruction can vary widely and is largely dependent on the individual teacher, but just the fact of the courses themselves being easily accessible and free, and specifically designed for new immigrants, this is much better than what the schools are facing, namely teachers with no special training in this field being asked to suddenly take on entire classes of kids with very little if no knowledge of German.
